Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium) is a cholesterol reducing drug which is part of a class of pharmaceuticals called "statins." Statins reduce cholesterol by reducing a specific enzyme responsible for the synthesis of cholesterol in the body. Crestor is manufactured by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP of Wilmington, Delaware and has been linked with multiple side effects, including kidney failure, kidney damage and life-threatening rhabdomyolysis which involves the destruction of muscle tissue. According to the consumer group Public Citizen, which has repeatedly called for a ban on the drug, the rate of reported kidney problems is about 75 times higher with Crestor than with all other drugs in the same class combined. According to Public Citizen’s analysis, there have been 6.4 reports of acute kidney failure or kidney damage for every 1 million Crestor prescriptions filled. Public Citizen recently stated that forty-one (41) patients who took Crestor have developed kidney damage.

Dr. Sidney Wolfe, the head of Public Citizen's Health Research Group, in a letter sent to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated: "It becomes clearer by the day that this drug is uniquely toxic without offering any unique benefit, and that it must be removed from the market.”

Crestor was approved by the FDA in August 2003, despite studies prior to approval showing that rhabdomyolysis had appeared in seven people in clinical trials.

The FDA on March 2, 2005 issued a public health advisory describing changes to specific sections of the product label concerning dangers associated with Crestor and recent study results pertaining to the safety of the drug. The FDA public health advisory, product information and revised label can be viewed by clicking here. The FDA's limited action is being heavily criticized by Dr. Wolfe of Public Citizen. You can view that criticism by clicking here.

US researchers say that a study released in the Journal of the American Heart Association on May 23, 2005 shows that Crestor has double the side effects, including deaths, of rival statin drugs.

Individuals taking Crestor have suffered from some of the following side effects:

If you or a loved one have had injuries consisting of kidney damage or severe muscle damage, this may have been caused by exposure to the drug Crestor. Because millions of prescriptions have been written since the drug was approved, it is increasingly important that individuals be advised and cautioned of the potentially fatal risks and complications that have been associated with the drug.

If you think you or a loved one may have suffered an injury or damages as a result of taking Crestor, you owe it to yourself to speak to an experienced drug or pharmaceutical attorney about the possibility of bringing a law suit to recover for your damages and injuries. The attorney will be able to ascertain if you have a claim for which suit can be filed and that can be brought to a successful settlement, verdict, award or other recovery, and the experienced lawyer will be able to advise you on any deadlines for bringing your legal claim for damages. Please contact the law firm of Ashcraft and Gerel, LLP to discuss your case with an experienced drug or pharmaceutical lawyer in our Drug Litigation Department.

*IMPORTANT: It is important to note that there are few instances when any two states agree on issues within a given field of the law. This document is intended to provide only an overview of Crestor claims in general, and it is not intended to substitute for the advice you would receive on your claim from experienced attorneys or be relied upon in the handling of a particular case. The rules and principles set forth in this article may vary from state to state. Drug litigation is fraught with danger to the inexperienced lay person, as well as to the inexperienced lawyer. It is strongly recommended that any injured victim of Crestor reading this page who is not already represented by an experienced lawyer, immediately seek an attorney to determine whether he or she has a claim.
