On February 14, 2007, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella Tennessee (a bacterium that causes food borne illness). FDA's warning was based on a recently completed epidemiological study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the states and local health agencies, which linked 288 cases of foodborne illness in 39 states to consumption of varying types of Peter Pan peanut butter.

The affected and recalled jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number 2111. Both of the brands subject to the recall, Peter Pan and Great Value, are manufactured in a single facility in Georgia by ConAgra. Photos of the jars of peanut butter subject of the recall can be found at: http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/photos/peanutbutter021407.html

Symptoms of a salmonella infection, which typically appear 12 to 72 hours after one eats the contaminated peanut butter, include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and fever. Healthy people might dismiss these symptoms as the flu, but in older people, small children and those with compromised immune systems, salmonella infection and its complications can be deadly. Individuals who have recently eaten Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 and have experienced any of these symptoms should contact their doctor or health care provider immediately to let them know that they may have eaten peanut butter subject to the recall. In addition, these individuals should take great care to preserve the jar of recalled peanut butter for analysis. If you don't have the jar, you can also have a stool sample tested to prove you were sick and to look for the specific strain of salmonella involved, which is called Salmonella Tennessee.
