ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lense solution has been associated with a rare fungal infection called fusarium keratitis. Fusarium keratitis causes severe eye irritation, may require corneal transplant and causes blindness if left untreated. Symptoms of fungal eye infection include blurry vision, eye pain, eye redness, sensitivity to light and discharge.

ReNu with MoistureLoc contact lens solution, was being manufactured in a Greenville, South Carolina plant, by the Rochester, New York based Bausch and Lomb, until the product was voluntarily withdrawn from the market in the United States on April 13, 2006.

On March 8, 2006, before the product was removed from the U.S. stores, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) received a report regarding three patients with contact lens-associated fusarium keratitis occurring within three months of the report. Initial contact with several corneal disease specialty centers in the United States revealed that other centers also had seen recent increases in fusarium keratitis. The CDC began an investigation of the Fusarium keratitis outbreak. As of May 2006, there were 130 confirmed cases of Fusarium keratitis. Over 60% of the people with confirmed fusarium keratitis had used ReNu with MoistureLoc, a Bausch & Lomb contact lens solution. 37 of the cases resulted in cornea transplant surgery.

Finally, on May 15, 2006, Bausch and Lomb announced its decision to permanently remove all ReNu with MoistureLoc products worldwide. According to Bausch & Lomb, "unique characteristics of the formulation of the ReNu with MoistureLoc product in certain unusual circumstances can increase the risk of fusarium infection."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have alerted health care professionals and their patients who wear soft contact lenses to an increasing number of reports of rare but serious fungal infections in the eye that can cause permanent blindness. Some patients have reported a significant loss of vision, resulting in the need for a corneal transplant.

The FDA and CDC are also advising consumers to take precautions to prevent contamination of the lenses and the products used to maintain them. These preventive practices include

In addition, the FDA and CDC are urgently advising consumers to consult their doctors immediately if they experience symptoms such as redness, pain, tearing, increased light sensitivity, blurry vision, discharge or swelling.
